Sandbach United Reach Out to Children in Ghana

Sandbach United Reach Out to Children in Ghana

Sandbach United have come to the aid of underprivileged children around the world by sending over 300 old football kits and boots to Ghana via the S.A.B.R.E charity. After recent donations to Africa and Romania, officials of Sandbach United were inspired to make the donation by ex-player, Stephen Cole, who recently travelled to Ghana to do voluntary work as part of an educational programme to help under privileged children; spending his time building facilities and coaching a variety of sports.

In 2008, three United officials went to Birmingham to hand over 10 sacks of boots and kits to the S.A.B.R.E trust who will embark on a 6,200 mile trip via France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania to deliver the donation. The S.A.B.R.E officials were delighted with the donation and assured Sandbach that they would be put to good use allowing many children to participate and develop through sports, one of the aims of Sandbach United.

Sandbach United Officials Dave Cole, Duncan Forbes and Colin Oakes are pictured making the presentation to SABRE Officials Dominic Bond (Development Director) and Aubrey Malcolm-Green (Operations Director).

Colin Oakes, SUFC President said; "Sandbach United are delighted to be able to contribute to this charity and help less fortunate children participate and develop through sport as we are able to help the development of children in Sandbach."

Whilst in Ghana, Stephen Cole was invited to play football for the local team, Besease, which included a Ghana under 18 international.

Steve said "Some of the players had no proper footwear so played in bare feet or homemade sandals and no shin pads, so the kit that Sandbach United sent over really made a difference. The pitch was on a 30 degree incline and the grass was well above the ankles with no pitch markings and at one stage the match was interrupted by chickens all over the pitch!"

Steve is pictured front left with the Besease team wearing their ECON sponsored Sandbach United kit.
