FA Vase: Saturday the 19th of September

A goal that can only be described as unlucky separated this closely battled match last Saturday with Sandbach United exiting the cup and the visitors going through to the next round.
Another lovely day greeted the Shed Enders after the enthralling penalty shootout win against AFC Liverpool a week before. Two weeks of successive sunshine and a hope of extending their 10 game unbeaten run to 11 was on the cards for Sandbach United as they faced a side coming into it with plenty of league experience under their belts so far this season.
The First 10 minutes of the game bought about with it a level of excitement as within 2 minutes Stapenhill should have taken the lead if it wasn’t for the legs of Danny Hamlett in the Sandbach United goal. Then 7 minutes later after a great piece of work on the right wing a cross was met by Bobby Mcdonell , who did well to get his head onto the ball, and hit the cross bar.
There was a nervy feel to the game in the first half both sides getting chances which included chances for both Robbie Hatton and Bobby Mcdonell but both sides could not seem to find the back of the net.
However in between the 30th and 40th minute Danny Hamlett pulled of not one , not two but three top draw saves and somehow managed to keep the game level . It seemed that nothing was getting passed him last Saturday and got his side to the end of 45 minutes on level terms.
The second half started brightly for Sandbach as Matthew Pearson started to make some smart runs down the right-hand side and managed to pull a few crosses off but unfortunately not able to force a goal for the home side.
Then , a moment of ill-fated luck, Stapenhill bought the ball to the edge of the Ramblers box put In a shot that wasn’t looking to trouble Danny Hamlett. It took a wretched deflection of Chris Rowntree and trickled into the back of the net. It was 1-0 to the visitors , there wasn’t much either Hamlett or Rowntree could have done.
The rest of the game came in two parts. The first, when Danny Hamlett was called on again to make save after save to keep the score low and the second, when the managers substitutions bought a late surge onto the Stapenhill goal. Credit to Sandbach who fought to the end and never once looked out of place against a side in a higher division.
Alas, a late drama there was not , Sandbach United had been knocked out of the FA Vase but it wasn’t through their lack of trying. Both sides were equally matched, and it could be argued that penalties may have been the more favoured outcome. However, it should be mentioned that the score could have been a lot worse if it weren’t for Danny Hamlett’s heroics in goal (for the second week running might I add).
